Vietnam’s Demilitarized Zone, or DMZ, is the area around the former border between North and South Vietnam. Historically it was a narrow band of terrain extending from Laos to the coast, five km on either side of the Ben Hai River, roughly on the 17th parallel, north latitude.

The area saw heavy fighting in the war, and ruins of old American military bases still exist. Even if you’re not interested in the history, the area has some spectacular mountain scenery and rugged jungles.

Highway of Horror

May 1, 1972 will never be forgotten by people in Quang Tri and Thua Thien provinces not because it is the International Labor Day, but because the horrible carnage on the Vietnam Highway 1 about ten kilometers south of Quang Tri City.

Thousands of civilians, mostly the elders, women, children and scores of soldiers were killed by artillery and infantry weapons in hours of shooting.

Long Hung Church

Head south from the town down highway 1a towards Hue and you’ll notice Long Hung Church. It was built in 1955-56 using reinforced concrete which is evident as the damage incurred in 1972 is still visible today.

It stands as a testament to the strength and bravery shown against the American an South Vietnamese forces. For 81 days the North Vietnamese held the church while the Americans and South Vietnamese forces fought to take it back with machine gun fire, grenades, and even shells from warships.

Ben Hai River – Hien Luong Bridge

Ben Hai River, also known as Rao Thanh River, starts from Truong Son Mountains and runs 100km through it to meet the sea at Cua Tung (Tung River Mouth).

Prior to the construction of the steel bridge, supervised by a French army engineer in 1950, the only way to cross the river was by boat.

Under the Geneva Accord on Viet Nam signed in 1954, the Ben Hai River was selected as a temporary demarcation line separating the country into two parts for military regrouping purposes. Hien Luong Bridge was then divided into two parts, each part serving as a border gate.

Cua Tung Beach

More than 90 families disappeared into three levels of tunnels running for almost 2km, and continued to live and work while bombs rained down around them. The tunnels are an amazing achievement of human toil, engineering and perseverance.

Dak Rong Bridge – Ho Chi Minh Trail

The current incarnation of the Dakrong Bridge was built in 1975 after reunification. Just west of the main DMZ zone, the bridge was considered the beginning of the Ho Chi Minh Trail network, and during the years of conflict with the United States, this access point was hotly contested. The Dakrong Bridge fell many times.

Now it’s a grand suspension bridge.

In the early hours of January 21, 1968, the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) began an attack on an isolated marine base at Khe Sanh. In what would later be known as the Battle of Khe Sanh, the devastating assault lasted for 77 days, one of the longest and deadliest of the war.
