Sai Gon Notre-Dame Basilica
Saigon Notre Dame Cathedral, built in the late 1880s by French colonists, is one of the few remaining strongholds of Catholicism in the largely Buddhist Vietnam. Located in Paris Square, the name Notre Dame was given after the installation of the statue ‘Peaceful Notre Dame’ in 1959.
In 1962, the Vatican conferred the Cathedral status as a basilica and gave it the official name of Saigon Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica. Measuring almost 60 metres in height, the cathedral’s distinctive neo-Romanesque features include the all-red brick façade (which were imported from Marseille), stained glass windows, two bell towers containing six bronze bells that still ring to this day, and a peaceful garden setting in the middle of downtown Ho Chi Minh City District 1.
Independnce palace
If anyone has come to the center of Saigon, once visit Independence Palace, also known as Reunification Palace a project located on a 15ha land in the heart of the city. The bold print of time and calendar, but also very poetic and romantic…
After the occupation of Cochinchina, on February 23, 1868, the governor of Cochinchina built the new fortified palace in Cochinchina. The palace has many different names throughout the periods: Norodom Palace (1889 – 1954), the Prime Minister (9-1954 – 10-1956), Independence Palace (10-1956 – 10-1976) and today is Reunification Hall. This is not only a unique architectural work but also associated with many important historical events of the country.
Sai Gon Center Post Office
Located in the city center, Saigon Central Post Office is an indispensable sight for foreign tourists to the city. Its unique architecture, great aesthetic and historical values have deeply left impression in tourists’ mind.
Being a mixture of Gothic, Renaissance and French influences, the building fascinates tourists by its typical colonial French features, from exterior to interior decorations. It was built around 1886 – 1891, based on the design of Gustave Eiffel – a famous French architect along with Foulhoux, his assistant. Now tourists can come here to admire the unique architecture of the post office, and to immerse themselves in the ancient world, from the post office boxes to phone booths.
Giac Lam pagoda
Giac Lam Pagoda, built in 1744, is the oldest Buddhist temple in Ho Chi Minh City and as such was listed as an important historical site by the Vietnamese Department of Culture in 1988.
Inside, this richly decorated shrine is comprised of three areas: the ceremonial hall, the chanting hall and the refectory. This large and sprawling establishment houses beautifully rendered images of Buddha in various incarnations, along with numerous Taoist deities, each with own altar. The ceremonial hall is dominated by the large statue of Amitabha Buddha. Outside, a new addition, the 32-metre tall stupa dominates the temple grounds. Visitors can climb up to the top floor for panoramic views of the city.
Cu Chi tunnels
Coming to the Cu Chi tunnels, you will have the opportunity to learn more about the reality of war and fighting life of the people of Cu Chi through the most vivid documentary and about the unique citadel of Cu Chi troops – the 120km of underground tunnels – honored as one of the 10 greatest underground works in the world.
It is now one of Ho Chi Minh’s most iconic attractions where you can enjoy plenty of activities. A popular option is following the narrow routes of the underground tunnel.
After Cu Chi tunnels, you will be transferred Can Tho for an overnight. Next day, early in the morning, boat awaits for a floating market visit, which have become crucial part of daily life in the Mekong Delta. Visiting one of these vibrant markets is something that should not be skipped.
